The Mood Booster Smoothie

Do you ever wake up on Monday morning with a feeling of dread? If your life sometimes feels like a total grind, The Mood Booster Smoothie is here to put some pep back in your step!

We created this mood-boosting blend for those days when you just want to crawl back into bed. And since we’re not fully over the winter hump yet, it’s still pretty easy to slip into a funk.

You may (understandably) be wondering, “What gives this smoothie its potent uplifting abilities?”

The Mood Booster Smoothie features two of our all-time favorite superfoods: maca and raw cacao. Maca is a Peruvian root known for its ability to help balance hormones and stabilize mood. It has an earthy, malt-like taste with an uplifting effect. It’s also an “adaptogen,” which means it can help manage stress levels, enhance strength and stamina, and increase energy and endurance. It’s one powerful little root!

Raw cacao, on the other hand, is probably one of the most mainstream mood enhancers. There’s a good reason so many of us love chocolate! Cacao contains a compound called anandamide. Anandamide is a powerful mood improver that’s sometimes referred to as the bliss molecule, because it creates a feeling of euphoria.

In addition to this little miracle chemical, cacao also boosts mood with dopamine-increasing phenylethylamine, calming stress reducer theobromine, and the feel-good neurotransmitter tryptophan which is crucial for serotonin production. And that’s not all (really!) – raw cacao also boasts the minerals magnesium, iron, chromium, manganese, zinc, copper, and phosphorus. In a nutshell, you can’t go wrong with this wonder superfood.

Yield: 1 quart


  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp raw cacao powder*
  • 1 tsp maca
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 3 pitted dates
  • 2 cups baby spinach


In a high-speed blender, combine coconut water, water, banana, blueberries, chia seeds, cacao, maca, almond butter, dates and spinach until smooth.

*If you are currently cleansing, you can still enjoy this mood-boosting recipe – just hold the cacao!
