The Healthy Mom’s Halloween Survival Guide

As healthy moms who want the best for our kiddos’ health too, Halloween is a tricky holiday to navigate. We don’t want our kids to feel like they’re missing out on the fun, but we also know that all that processed sugar does not serve their long-term health. Like Jo, her daughter Ilse is super sensitive to sugar, so all that high-sugar conventional candy is off-limits.

With the rise in childhood diabetes and the rise of diagnoses of behavioral disorders like ADD and ADHD, we’re sure there are many kids out there who are also highly sensitive to the gnarly effects of sugar.

That’s why we’ve come up with a list of our favorite natural candies and other treats you can switch out for all the bad stuff your kids collect throughout the night so they can still have a fun time trick-or-treating but not be wired on processed sugar all night.

We call it the “Switch Witch” – the Halloween witch who comes in the middle of the night and “switches out” all the processed sugary candy for some healthier options. Our kiddos love it, and it gives us a chance to give them better sweet treats.

Smart Sweets Candy
These bite-sized gummy candies are sweetened naturally with stevia, not artificial sweeteners or refined sugar. They’re a great alternative to the more popular conventional gummy candies.

Zollipops
All of our kiddos LOVE these lollipops! They’re sweetened with xylitol, all colors are derived from natural plant based sources, and they’re free of most major allergens – a win-win!

Good Chocolate
Sweetened with mesquite powder, stevia, and erythritol, Good Chocolate contains zero sugar. Their chocolates are so wonderfully rich, a little goes a long way.

That’s It Fruit Bars
These fruit bars are pretty self-explanatory: they contain just fruit –that’s it! No added sugars or colors.

Veggie Go’s Organic Fruit and Veggie Strips
These are an upgrade to the classic fruit strips – they include veggies, too! These yummy fruit and veggie strips are sure to please even your pickiest eaters.

Honey sticks
Honey is nature’s candy, and a great alternative for kiddos with lots of food sensitivities. These little honey sticks are a great halloween treat.
